Subina Thapaliya
(Nepal – GLODEP cohort 2022–2024)
I am from GLODEP graduating class of 2024. Two months after graduation, I joined the World Bank Group as a consultant, where I leverage my expertise in economics and geospatial data analysis to inform lending and policy. My work focuses on just sustainable growth and on inclusive, climate-resilient infrastructure—grounded in hands-on operational experience in Fragile, Conflict, and Violence (FCV) contexts. I specialize in translating data-driven evidence into actionable investments and policies. I have contributed to lending operations, investment projects, and advisory services in Yemen, Malaysia, Thailand, and Egypt.
My two-year, rigorous academic journey in the GLODEP program—while navigating the systems, cultures, and societies of four countries—has profoundly shaped my professional life in international development. Exposure to diverse cultures alongside classmates from across the globe fostered the agility, curiosity, and adaptability needed to collaborate with global teams. GLODEP provided solid training that demanded quick adaptation to unfamiliar contexts and embracing uncertainty with an action-oriented mind-set. The resilient and collaborative spirit I cultivated through GLODEP has been a significant asset in my current role. Academically, I deeply value the critical thinking and interdisciplinary education I received. Alongside a strong foundation in economics, econometrics, and data analysis, coursework on intersectionality, governance, and just inclusive development strengthened the knowledge base I draw on in my work.
There were several moments during the GLODEP program that reinforced that two years of master’s studies away from home were truly worth it. These moments are embedded in friendships developed during the program, over our adventurous weekend and holiday trips across dozens of European countries; kindness from strangers in foreign places and impromptu, long conversations with them using translation apps; inspiring lectures that pushed me to think more deeply and critically about inclusive and just development; and the kind support and guidance from friends, professors, and staff in the program while navigating challenges. I deeply appreciate and cherish the learning, growth, and memories from my GLODEP journey.
